The IBHS FORTIFIED Home™ Program

IBHS created the FORTIFIED Home™ program to help strengthen homes from hurricanes, high winds, hail, and severe thunderstorms. Protect your home from natural disasters by using FORTIFIED Home construction standards and methods. IBHS FORTIFIED goes beyond emergency preparedness and disaster preparedness to give you the peace of mind that comes from knowing your home has been FORTIFIED to offer disaster protection.

New Construction

The FORTIFIED Home™ program makes superior engineering and building standards—developed using more than 20 years of storm damage investigations—available to anyone seeking to build a new, more resilient, single-family residence.

FORTIFIED Home™ strengthens existing single-family, detached homes using a unique systems-based method for creating stronger, safer homes. It can be affordable at every price point for those remodeling their home.

The FORTIFIED Home™–Hail program helps homeowners strengthen their home against damaging hail.

High Winds

The FORTIFIED Home™–High Wind program helps homeowners strengthen their home against severe thunderstorms, straight-line wind events, and high winds at the edges of a weak tornado.

The FORTIFIED Home™–Hurricane program helps homeowners strengthen their home against the devastating power of tropical storms and hurricanes.

Designation Levels

The program employs an incremental approach toward making existing homes more resistant to damage from hurricanes, tropical storms, hailstorms, high winds and wind-driven rain associated with thunderstorms. With three levels of FORTIFIED Home™ designation available—Bronze, Silver and Gold—builders can work with homeowners to choose a desired level of protection that best suits their budgets and resilience goals.

The FORTIFIED Home™ Bronze level addresses the roof system. Upgrades reduce wind and water entering the attic through the roof covering and vents.

In addition to the roof system addressed in the Bronze level, the FORTIFIED Home™ Silver level addresses windows, doors and attached structures.

After the roof, openings (windows and doors) and attached structures have been addressed, the FORTIFIED Home™ Gold level ties the house together by connecting the roof to the walls to the floors to the foundation, so it acts as one system.
