IBHS Lead Resarch Meteorologist Dr. Ian Giammanco and Staff Scientist Heather Sommers deploy the new disdrometer (impact probe) during the 2014 hail field study.  The disdrometer is designed to collect data on the hail size distribution and impact energy of falling hailstones.

IBHS conducts field research to study hailstorms with the goal of reducing property losses and improving weather forecast models and radar detection of hail. Additionally, IBHS conducts post-disaster investigations to better understand the characteristics of various storms for the purpose of reducing, and hopefully preventing future property damage.
