Alice Runyan
Bradenton, Florida
After spending two fearful hurricane seasons, 79-year-old homeowner Alice Runyan decided to make her home better able to withstand the next round of storms. She relied on a contractor, who had worked with IBHS engineers to develop affordable retrofit options.
Together, they addressed weaknesses in home's structural integrity by bracing the roof trusses, adding nails and straps, and securing the roof-to-wall connections. The contractor also protected the home against water intrusion by securing soffits and caulking seams.
Alice took the project to the next level by having hurricane shutters and an impact-resistant garage door installed. She bought a generator and a NOAA weather radio. The next time the winds blow, she'll be ready.
“I couldn't be happier. I tell everyone I know they should do the same thing. It's your biggest investment; you should protect it as best you can," she said. “It is worth doing this. I feel very, very secure really.”
