About IBHS

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is an independent, nonprofit, scientific research and communications organization supported solely by property insurers and reinsurers. IBHS’ building safety research leads to real-world solutions for home and business owners, helping to create more resilient communities.

At the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, our mission is to conduct objective, scientific research to identify and promote the most effective ways to strengthen homes, businesses and communities against natural disasters and other causes of loss.

We envision a world where the durability of homes and commercial buildings is a core societal value—greatly reducing the financial loss, community disruption, and human toll that often result from natural and man-made disasters.

Our members are insurers and reinsurers that conduct business in the U.S. or reinsure risks located in the U.S.

  • Affiliate membership is open to brokers, managing general agents and independent agents.
  • Associate membership is open to all others who support our mission.

IBHS Research Center

Opened in 2010, the IBHS Research Center is a state-of-the-art facility where IBHS researchers evaluate various residential and commercial construction materials, practices and systems. This unique facility allows for testing of full-scale one- and two-story homes and commercial buildings and systems in realistic replications of real-world, potentially disastrous events such as high winds, wind-driven rain, hail and wildfire.
